En çok tercih edilen kemirgen türü olan ginepig, kendi içerisinde pek çok türe sahip olan müthiş sevimliliğe sahip harika ev bir evcil hayvan türüdür. Ginepig türü genellikle hamster türü ile karıştırılmaktadır. Her ne kadar birbirlerine benzeseler de birbirinden farklı iki kemirgen türüdür.

İlk olarak Güney Amerika’da ortaya çıkan bu sevimli tür, oldukça köklü de bir geçmişe sahiptir. Öyle ki Peru’da yapılan arkeolojik kazılar sonucu 10 bin yıllık olduğu düşünülen bir ginepig iskeletine rastlanmıştır. Önceleri farklı amaçlar için beslenen ginepig türü, Amerika kıtasının keşfinden sonra İspanyollar tarafından Avrupa’ya getirilmiş ve evcil hayvan olarak oldukça ilgi görmüştür.

Genellikle gruplar halinde yaşayan ginepigler, ataerkil bir toplum yapısına sahiptir. Çok eşli bir aile yapısı olan ginepiglerde, yavru erkekler büyüdüğü zaman gruptan ayrılarak, kendi gruplarını kurarlar.

Karakteristik özelliklerinden dolayı, çekingen bir yapıya sahip olan ginepig türü, tüm gününü saklanıp yiyecek aramakla geçirir. Yiyecek aradığı bölge, çekingen yapısından ötürü, güvenli yuvalarından pek de uzakta değildir.

Ginepiglerin yaşam süreleri

Ginepig, kemirgen türleri arasında en uzun ömre sahip olan canlıdır. Doğru beslenme ve yaşam koşullarının etkisiyle yaşam süreleri 12 yılı bulabilir. Bu da diğer kemirgen türlerine kıyasla oldukça uzun sayılan bir yaşam süresidir.

Evcil ginepigler için, günlük lif ihtiyaçlarını otlardan karşılamasının yanı sıra C vitamini değeri yüksek olan domates, brokoli, salatalık, pancar, ananas, limon, marul, bamya, ıspanak, kereviz, üzüm, portakal ve maydanoz gibi sebze ve meyveler de verilmelidir. Lif ihtiyacını karşılamak için de ot, kuru mama ve saman ile beslenebilir.

Çok fazla sıvı tüketmesi ginepigler için oldukça olumsuz bir durumdur. Bu nedenle kuru mamalarla beslenmek ginepigler için daha doğru olacaktır. C vitamini yüksek meyve ve sebzelerin yanında sürekli olarak kafeslerinde kuru mama, ot veya bunlar gibi besinler bulundurulmalıdır. Ginepiglerin sadece kuru mama ve kuru otlarla beslenmesi de her ne kadar günlük lif ihtiyacını karşılasa da, vücudunun C vitamini eksikliğinden dolayı alması gereken diğer besinler de mevcuttur.
