Akvaryum balığı türleri arasında neredeyse en uzun yaşayanlardan birisidir. Yaklaşık 10 yıl yaşayabilen Makrakanta balıkları agresiftir. 35 cm’ye kadar büyüyebildikleri için en az 500 litre hacimli akvaryum tercih edilmelidir.
Ağırlıklı olarak etçil yemlerle beslenmesi tavsiye edilse de diyet gerektiren durumlarda otçul da beslenebilirler. Hassas yapıda olduklarından akvaryumun temiz olması ve beyaz benek hastalığına karşı tedbir alınması gerekir.
Discus
Zarafeti nedeniyle en sevilen tropik akvaryum balığı olsa da bakımı bir o kadar zordur. Aslında zorluğu ihmal edilmemesiyle paraleldir. Öncelikle yaklaşık en az 200 litre hacimli ve iyi filtrelenen bir akvaryum tercih edilmelidir. Kendilerini güvende hissetmeleri için akvaryumun arkasını ve yanlarından bir tanesini ışık geçirmeyecek şekilde kapatabilirsiniz.
Nitrit ve nitrat oranlarının mümkün oldukça düşük olması gerekir. Aksi durumda hastalığa yakalanma riskleri artar. Discus balıkları hem etçil hem otçuldur ama iki yönlü beslenmesi gerekir, birinden birini seçmemelisiniz. 40 litrelik akvaryumda beslenen bu balık türleri barışçıl özelliğe sahiptirler. 4-5 cm kadar büyüdüklerinden ve karakterleri gereği agresif balıklarla beslenmesi önerilmiyor. Habitatına uygun olması için akvaryumuna bolca su bitkisi yerleştirebilirsiniz.
Puntius Tetrazona (Tetrazon – Kaplan Barb)
Temiz suda yüzmeyi tercih eden Tetrazonlar, akvaryumda irili ufaklı çakıl taşını, kök veya dal şeklinde yerleştirilebilecek su bitkilerini seveceklerdir. Hem etçil hem otçul beslenen bu akvaryum balığı agresif yapıdadır. Diğer balıklara zarar verebildiği için en uygun arkadaşları olan onunla benzer boyuttaki sazanlarla besleyebilirsiniz. Utangaç, yavaş yüzen ve uzun yüzgeçli akvaryum balıklarıyla pek anlaşamazlar.
4 yıl yaşayabilen bu balıklar hareketli yapıdadır. Büyüklükleri en fazla 6 cm olan Tetrazon balığı için 80 litre hacimli akvaryum idealdir.
Pangio Kuhlii (Kuhli)
Güneydoğu Asya kökenli bu akvaryum balığı barışçıl bir davranış biçimine sahiptir. Hem etçil hem otçul olan bu balık, en fazla 13 cm büyür. Genel olarak taban seviyesinde yüzer ve minimum 150 litre hacimdeki akvaryumlarda beslenir.
Dış parazitlere ve beyaz benek hastalığına karşı hassaslardır. Agresif balıklara karşı savunmasız olduklarından beraber besleneceği balık türlerini doğru seçmek gerekir. Doğal davranışlarında bulunması için kendi türünden 4 veya daha fazla olarak beslenmesi tavsiye ediliyor.
